Asbestosis Symptoms

If you are worried that you have been exposed to asbestos, there are many signs and symptoms to consider. Note that a doctor can offer testing to confirm or deny the actual cause of your ailment, but many warning flags, some benign, others serious, do present themselves during the early stages of exposure.

Asbestosis in particular is a type of non-cancerous lung disease caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos. The process involves damage to the lungs caused by fibers in the air (in this case, asbestos fibers), which the lungs then repair. Over time, this act of continually repairing the lungs leaves behind scar tissue in the place of healthy lung cells, which can reduce normal breathing function dramatically.

Asbestosis Symptoms are generally mild at first, which is why even a doctor may not notice anything serious at hand. Identifying asbestos exposure, asbestosis especially, can take a long time, as the damage inflicted by exposure is not readily apparent to be caused by asbestos.  Another difficulty is that it may take several years for the damage to present itself. As the stripping of healthy lung cells occurs, symptoms tend to appear and worsen over prolonged periods of time, and just because a person is no longer being exposed is not a guarantee that the damage isn’t already done.

Patients may complain of a mild cough at first, which is indicative of too many things for one direct prognosis. Early asbestosis symptoms may also include shortness of breath, which at first can occur only with exertion, but eventually may occur while at rest. Chest pains often follow, along with a harder, dryer cough. Finally, a late stage symptom of asbestosis is a deformity of the fingers called “clubbing.” With this final symptom, the tips of the fingers are rounder and more spread out, as if permanently pressed down.

If you think you have been exposed to asbestos for any extended period of time, and especially if you experience shortness of breath or any other symptoms, you should seek professional medical attention immediately and inform your doctor of your previous exposure. Asbestosis is not to be taken lightly, as it can seriously hinder healthy living later in life.
